The 1911 Census recorded 1,975 people named McCloskey in Ireland, about 0.045% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 447th most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 947 men and 1,027 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)

The McCloskeys were heavily concentrated in Derry, home to 65.4% of them (1,292 people). Next came Antrim (246), Donegal (161), Tyrone (130) and Dublin (34).

The average McCloskey in 1911 was 31.6 years old, 30.7 for men and 32.4 for women; slightly older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (136), James, Patrick, Thomas and Michael; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (130), followed by Catherine, Sarah, Bridget and Margaret.

The most common entry on a McCloskey's census form was "Scholar"; 18.2% (359) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (17.7%), farm labourer (4.8%), seamstress (4.1%) and domestic servant (3.2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 23% of all McCloskeys, followed by textiles & clothing, domestic service and retail & commerce.
What religion is McCloskey?
McCloskeys were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 93.3% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (3.7%), Presbyterian (2.5%), Methodist (0.1%) and No Religion (0.1%).
