Women came out slightly ahead, 86.2% reading and writing against 82.6% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were James (3), William, Robert, Samuel and Willie. For women it was Jane (4), followed by Lizzie, Agnes, Mary Jane and Mary Josephine.

The most common entry on a McCoach's census form was "Scholar"; 36.5% (19) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (15.4%), domestic servant (3.8%), laundress (3.8%) and clergy / religious (1.9%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 15.4% of all McCoaches, followed by domestic service, metal & engineering and professional.
What religion is McCoach?
The largest religious group among McCoaches was Presbyterian, at 36.5%. The remainder were mostly Anglican (34.6%) and Roman Catholic (26.9%).
