The 1911 Census recorded 175 people named McDaniel in Ireland; roughly one in every 25,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 83 men and 91 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)

McDaniel literacy in 1911
Of the McDaniels whose literacy was recorded, 78.2% could both read and write, 3.5% could read but not write, and 18.2% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 81.5% reading and writing against 75.3% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
McDaniel common first names
The most common male names were James (14), John, Patrick, Thomas and Michael; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (12), followed by Lizzie, Catherine, Bridget and Frances.
McDaniel occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a McDaniel's census form was "Scholar"; 17.7% (31) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (15.4%), farm labourer (5.1%), general labourer (4%) and shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (4%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 22.3% of all McDaniels, followed by retail & commerce, domestic service and general labourers.
What religion is McDaniel?
Most McDaniels, 60.6%, were Roman Catholic. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (29.1%) and Anglican (8%).
