The 1911 Census recorded 695 people named McFall in Ireland; roughly one in every 6,300 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 344 men and 350 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)

The McFalls were heavily concentrated in Antrim, home to 77.3% of them (537 people). Next came Derry (70), Down (46), Armagh (24) and Dublin (10).

The average McFall in 1911 was 27.0 years old, 26.3 for men and 27.7 for women; a touch younger than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
McFall literacy in 1911
Of the McFalls whose literacy was recorded, 75.8% could both read and write, 4.2% could read but not write, and 20% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 78.1% reading and writing against 73.3% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (48), James, William, Robert and Thomas. For women it was Mary (34), followed by Elizabeth, Jane, Maggie and Sarah.
McFall occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a McFall's census form was "Scholar"; 20.9% (145) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were textile worker (8.8%), general labourer (6%), farmer (5.8%) and farm labourer (5.6%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 11.9% of all McFalls, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and domestic service.
What religion is McFall?
The largest religious group among McFalls was Roman Catholic, at 36%. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (35%), Anglican (22.3%), Unitarian (3.7%) and Baptist (0.7%).
