Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The largest religious group among McFarlanes was Presbyterian, at 45.5%. The remainder were mostly Anglican (26.3%), Roman Catholic (19.2%), Methodist (2.8%) and Congregationalist (2.3%).
