The 1911 Census recorded 311 people named McFerran in Ireland; roughly one in every 14,000 people carried the name. There were noticeably more women than men recorded: 175 women to 133 men. (A small number, 3, had no sex recorded.)

The McFerrans were heavily concentrated in Antrim, home to 65.3% of them (203 people). Next came Down (76), Dublin (19), Tyrone (6) and Armagh (4).

The average McFerran in 1911 was 29.5 years old, 27.2 for men and 31.3 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
McFerran literacy in 1911
Of the McFerrans whose literacy was recorded, 88.5% could both read and write, 2.1% could read but not write, and 9.4% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (18), James, William, Thomas and Daniel. For women it was Mary (15), followed by Sarah, Margaret, Agnes and Elizabeth.
McFerran occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a McFerran's census form was "Scholar"; 22.2% (69) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (6.8%), shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (6.8%), textile worker (5.5%) and clerk / office worker (1.9%). Grouped by sector, textiles & clothing accounted for 8.4% of all McFerrans, followed by retail & commerce, agriculture and domestic service.
What religion is McFerran?
Most McFerrans, 65.6%, were Presbyterian. The remainder were mostly Roman Catholic (19.3%), Anglican (7.7%), Non-Conformist (1.6%) and Protestant (1.6%).
