The average McGall in 1911 was 36.4 years old, 36.4 for men and 36.5 for women; noticeably older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
McGall literacy in 1911
Of the McGalls whose literacy was recorded, 65.9% could both read and write, 17.1% could read but not write, and 17.1% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 67.6% reading and writing against 64.6% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
McGall common first names
The most common male names were James (10), John, Thomas, William and David. For women it was Elizabeth (5), followed by Annie, Mary Ann, Sarah and Edith.
McGall occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a McGall's census form was "Scholar"; 21.2% (18) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (11.8%), farm labourer (10.6%), blacksmith / smith (8.2%) and general labourer (4.7%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 22.4% of all McGalls, followed by metal & engineering, general labourers and textiles & clothing.
What religion is McGall?
Most McGalls, 57.6%, were Presbyterian. The remainder were mostly Anglican (20%), Roman Catholic (20%) and Methodist (1.2%).
