Of the McGeoughs whose literacy was recorded, 74.9% could both read and write, 5.1% could read but not write, and 20% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 76% reading and writing against 73.8% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (24), Patrick, James, Peter and Francis. For women it was Mary (34), followed by Catherine, Bridget, Annie and Margaret.

The most common entry on a McGeough's census form was "Scholar"; 21.3% (90) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (20.1%), farm labourer (3.8%), textile worker (3.5%) and general labourer (2.6%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 24.1% of all McGeoughs, followed by textiles & clothing, retail & commerce and general labourers.
What religion is McGeough?
McGeoughs were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 97.6% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (1.4%) and Presbyterian (0.9%).
