Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 17% of all McGeowns, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and retail & commerce.

McGeowns were predominantly Roman Catholic (82.4%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (9.3%), Presbyterian (7.2%) and Methodist (0.9%).
