Of the McGillans whose literacy was recorded, 69.2% could both read and write, 5.8% could read but not write, and 25% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 76.2% reading and writing against 64.5% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farm labourer (5.8%), farmer (5.8%), carter / driver / groom (3.8%) and seamstress (3.8%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 11.5% of all McGillans, followed by textiles & clothing, domestic service and food & drink.
What religion is McGillan?
McGillans were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 96.2% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (1.9%) and Presbyterian (1.9%).
