Men came out slightly ahead, 87.2% reading and writing against 66.7% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 23% of all McGinnesses, followed by retail & commerce, domestic service and general labourers.

McGinnesses were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 93.1% of them. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (5.7%) and Anglican (1.1%).
