The 1911 Census recorded 818 people named McGivern in Ireland; roughly one in every 5,400 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 379 men and 439 women.

The McGiverns were heavily concentrated in Down, home to 54% of them (442 people). Next came Antrim (171), Armagh (97), Cork (30) and Monaghan (21).

The average McGivern in 1911 was 29.1 years old, 27.6 for men and 30.3 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
McGivern literacy in 1911
Of the McGiverns whose literacy was recorded, 74.6% could both read and write, 6.1% could read but not write, and 19.3% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 76.5% reading and writing against 72.9% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (54), James, Patrick, Thomas and Edward. For women it was Mary (48), followed by Bridget, Margaret, Ellen and Elizabeth.

The most common entry on a McGivern's census form was "Scholar"; 20.3% (166) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (14.9%), textile worker (6.6%), general labourer (3.5%) and farm labourer (1.8%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 17.1% of all McGiverns, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and building & construction.
What religion is McGivern?
McGiverns were predominantly Roman Catholic (83.9%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (8.8%), Presbyterian (4%), Non-Conformist (2%) and Methodist (1.1%).
