McGonigal literacy in 1911
Of the McGonigals whose literacy was recorded, 66.1% could both read and write, 7.6% could read but not write, and 26.3% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 74.4% reading and writing against 59.1% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (8.3%), general labourer (6.7%), farm labourer (5.6%) and domestic servant (3.9%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 13.9% of all McGonigals, followed by general labourers, domestic service and textiles & clothing.

McGonigals were predominantly Roman Catholic (79.4%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (6.7%), Presbyterian (6.7%), Baptist (4.4%) and Congregationalist (2.8%).
