Men came out slightly ahead, 82.5% reading and writing against 80% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were textile worker (6.2%), barber / hairdresser (4.6%), farmer (4.6%) and other maker / factory worker (3.1%). Grouped by sector, textiles & clothing accounted for 10.8% of all McGorans, followed by retail & commerce, agriculture and manufacturing & trades.
