The 1911 Census recorded 234 people named McGown in Ireland; roughly one in every 19,000 people carried the name. There were noticeably more women than men recorded: 132 women to 101 men. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with McGown in Ireland
The McGowns were heavily concentrated in Mayo, home to 56.8% of them (133 people). Next came Antrim (27), Down (25), Donegal (10) and Sligo (10).
McGown average age in 1911
The average McGown in 1911 was 32.4 years old, 32.2 for men and 32.5 for women; slightly older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
McGown literacy in 1911
Of the McGowns whose literacy was recorded, 72% could both read and write, 5.8% could read but not write, and 22.2% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
McGown common first names
The most common male names were John (19), Michael, Patrick, Thomas and James; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (30), followed by Bridget, Ellen, Anne and Catherine.
McGown occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a McGown's census form was "Scholar"; 21.8% (51) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (17.5%), farm labourer (2.1%), retired / pensioner (1.7%) and domestic servant (1.3%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 20.1% of all McGowns, followed by textiles & clothing, domestic service and retail & commerce.
What religion is McGown?
McGowns were predominantly Roman Catholic (79.5%). The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (15.4%), Anglican (4.3%) and Unitarian (0.4%).
