Of the McGrades whose literacy was recorded, 90% could both read and write, 2.5% could read but not write, and 7.5% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 91.7% reading and writing against 87.5% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were James (7), Thomas, John, Edward and Michael. For women it was Mary (4), followed by Bridget, Cassie, Catherine and Eliza.

The most common occupation among McGrades was farmer, 30.9% of them (25 people). Next came scholar / student (21%), farm labourer (16%), medical / nursing (2.5%) and shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (2.5%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 46.9% of all McGrades, followed by professional, retail & commerce and domestic service.
