Of the McGreals whose literacy was recorded, 74.5% could both read and write, 3.1% could read but not write, and 22.4% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 76.2% reading and writing against 72.9% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (53), Patrick, Michael, Thomas and James; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (57), followed by Bridget, Margaret, Catherine and Ellen.

The most common entry on a McGreal's census form was "Scholar"; 24.8% (149) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (21.3%), farm labourer (3.8%), housekeeper (2%) and shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (1.7%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 26.3% of all McGreals, followed by domestic service, retail & commerce and textiles & clothing.

McGreals were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 98.2% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (1.8%).
