McGuigan literacy in 1911
Of the McGuigans whose literacy was recorded, 75.2% could both read and write, 5.5% could read but not write, and 19.2% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (102), James, Patrick, Thomas and Michael; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (78), followed by Margaret, Ellen, Bridget and Catherine.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (13%), textile worker (7.4%), general labourer (3.8%) and farm labourer (3.5%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 16.6% of all McGuigans, followed by textiles & clothing, domestic service and general labourers.
What religion is McGuigan?
McGuigans were predominantly Roman Catholic (87.3%). The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (6.8%), Anglican (4.6%), Baptist (0.7%) and Non-Conformist (0.1%).
