That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.

Men came out slightly ahead, 76.9% reading and writing against 74.4% of women. The most common male names were John (184), James, Patrick, Thomas and Michael; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (226), followed by Bridget, Margaret, Annie and Catherine.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (15.9%), farm labourer (4.2%), general labourer (3.8%) and domestic servant (2.9%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 20.5% of all McGuinnesses, followed by domestic service, textiles & clothing and general labourers.

McGuinnesses were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 94.7% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (2.3%), Presbyterian (1.7%) and Non-Conformist (0.1%).
