Of the McIlwraths whose literacy was recorded, 80.4% could both read and write, 5.5% could read but not write, and 14.1% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 85.1% reading and writing against 76.6% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Grouped by sector, textiles & clothing accounted for 14.8% of all McIlwraths, followed by agriculture, general labourers and metal & engineering.

The largest religious group among McIlwraths was Presbyterian, at 47.7%. The remainder were mostly Anglican (36.7%), Roman Catholic (6.2%), Unitarian (5.5%) and Plymouth Brethren (2.3%).
