McIntosh literacy in 1911
Of the McIntoshes whose literacy was recorded, 82.6% could both read and write, 3.2% could read but not write, and 14.2% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 85.9% reading and writing against 78.7% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were James (21), John, William, Alexander and Robert. For women it was Mary (15), followed by Jane, Ellen, Annie and Elizabeth.

The most common entry on a McIntosh's census form was "Scholar"; 18% (62) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were textile worker (7%), farmer (4.3%), metal worker / engineer (4.1%) and other maker / factory worker (3.5%). Grouped by sector, textiles & clothing accounted for 9% of all McIntoshes, followed by agriculture, metal & engineering and manufacturing & trades.
What religion is McIntosh?
The largest religious group among McIntoshes was Presbyterian, at 48.4%. The remainder were mostly Anglican (21.2%), Roman Catholic (19.4%), Methodist (5.2%) and Plymouth Brethren (2.6%).
