The 1911 Census recorded 8,567 people named McKenna in Ireland, about 0.195% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 71st most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 4,273 men and 4,284 women. (A small number, 10, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with McKenna in Ireland
Monaghan had the largest share of McKennas, 22.5% (1,931 people). Next came Tyrone (1,014), Antrim (897), Derry (730) and Dublin (656).

McKenna average age in 1911
The average McKenna in 1911 was 31.2 years old, 30.8 for men and 31.7 for women; slightly older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
McKenna literacy in 1911
Of the McKennas whose literacy was recorded, 75.7% could both read and write, 4.8% could read but not write, and 19.6% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were Patrick (639), John, James, Michael and Thomas; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (628), followed by Bridget, Catherine, Ellen and Margaret.

The most common occupation among McKennas was farmer, 19.7% of them (1,687 people). Next came scholar / student (18.8%), general labourer (3.8%), farm labourer (3.8%) and domestic servant (2.7%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 23.8% of all McKennas, followed by textiles & clothing, domestic service and general labourers.

McKennas were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 95.9% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (2.7%), Presbyterian (0.6%) and Methodist (0.1%).
