The 1911 Census recorded 1,792 people named McKeon in Ireland, about 0.041% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 490th most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 899 men and 892 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)

Leitrim had the largest share of McKeons, 23.4% (419 people). Next came Dublin (256), Roscommon (229), Meath (121) and Longford (107).

The average McKeon in 1911 was 31.2 years old, 31.7 for men and 30.8 for women; slightly older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.

Of the McKeons whose literacy was recorded, 81% could both read and write, 4.1% could read but not write, and 14.9% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (141), James, Patrick, Michael and Thomas; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (133), followed by Bridget, Catherine, Kate and Annie.

The most common occupation among McKeons was farmer, 19.4% of them (347 people). Next came scholar / student (19.3%), farm labourer (4.3%), general labourer (3.2%) and domestic servant (2.7%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 24.4% of all McKeons, followed by domestic service, general labourers and textiles & clothing.

McKeons were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 96.1% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (2.7%), Presbyterian (0.1%) and Congregationalist (0.1%).
