The 1911 Census recorded 1,832 people named McKey in Ireland, about 0.042% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 480th most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 892 men and 934 women. (A small number, 6, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with McKey in Ireland
Tipperary had the largest share of McKeys, 16.3% (299 people). Next came Antrim (200), Down (199), Kilkenny (195) and Dublin (165).

McKey average age in 1911
The average McKey in 1911 was 30.0 years old, 29.7 for men and 30.3 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
McKey literacy in 1911
Of the McKeys whose literacy was recorded, 83.2% could both read and write, 3.3% could read but not write, and 13.5% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (153), James, Patrick, Thomas and William. For women it was Mary (145), followed by Bridget, Margaret, Annie and Ellen; matching the national top five exactly.

The most common entry on a McKey's census form was "Scholar"; 20.7% (380) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (12.8%), farm labourer (3.8%), general labourer (3.5%) and textile worker (2.8%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 16.9% of all McKeys, followed by textiles & clothing, domestic service and general labourers.
What religion is McKey?
Most McKeys, 69.1%, were Roman Catholic. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (14.7%), Anglican (12.1%), Methodist (2.7%) and Baptist (0.3%).
