Antrim was McL country: 29.1% of them (80 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Donegal (38), Dublin (34), Derry (20) and Galway (11).

The average McL in 1911 was 42.5 years old, 40.5 for men and 46.4 for women; noticeably older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
McL literacy in 1911
Of the McLs whose literacy was recorded, 68.5% could both read and write, 6.9% could read but not write, and 24.6% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 74.4% reading and writing against 57.7% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were J (43), P, D, M and R. For women it was M (33), followed by S, C, A and B.
McL occupations in 1911
The most common occupation among McLs was general labourer, 20.4% of them (56 people). Next came farmer (12.4%), domestic servant (11.3%), textile worker (7.3%) and farm labourer (5.1%). Grouped by sector, general labourers accounted for 20.4% of all McLs, followed by agriculture, domestic service and textiles & clothing.
What religion is McL?
McLs were predominantly Roman Catholic (73.1%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (14.9%), Presbyterian (9.5%) and Baptist (0.4%).
