Men came out slightly ahead, 83.9% reading and writing against 81.5% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were general labourer (3.9%), sailor / dock worker (3.5%), domestic servant (3.1%) and metal worker / engineer (3.1%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 7.3% of all McLeods, followed by domestic service, transport and general labourers.
What religion is McLeod?
Most McLeods, 57.5%, were Presbyterian. The remainder were mostly Roman Catholic (14.7%), Anglican (12.7%), Methodist (3.5%) and Unitarian (3.5%).
