The average McLernon in 1911 was 29.0 years old, 29.2 for men and 28.9 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.

McLernon literacy in 1911

Of the McLernons whose literacy was recorded, 71.2% could both read and write, 4.3% could read but not write, and 24.2% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 74.8% reading and writing against 68.4% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were James (24), John, William, Daniel and Patrick. For women it was Mary (26), followed by Margaret, Sarah, Annie and Catherine.

The most common entry on a McLernon's census form was "Scholar"; 20.8% (74) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (12.7%), farm labourer (7.3%), textile worker (5.4%) and domestic servant (3.1%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 20% of all McLernons, followed by textiles & clothing, domestic service and general labourers.

What religion is McLernon?

Most McLernons, 61.4%, were Roman Catholic. The remainder were mostly Anglican (17.7%), Presbyterian (15.8%) and Methodist (4.8%).
