The 1911 Census recorded 4,608 people named McManus in Ireland, about 0.105% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 170th most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 2,290 men and 2,312 women. (A small number, 6, had no sex recorded.)

Fermanagh had the largest share of McManuses, 23.8% (1,095 people). Next came Roscommon (489), Cavan (469), Antrim (391) and Leitrim (336).

The average McManus in 1911 was 30.9 years old, 30.9 for men and 30.9 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
McManus literacy in 1911
Of the McManuses whose literacy was recorded, 75.6% could both read and write, 5.1% could read but not write, and 19.3% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (342), Patrick, James, Thomas and Michael; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (299), followed by Bridget, Ellen, Margaret and Catherine.

The most common occupation among McManuses was farmer, 21.4% of them (987 people). Next came scholar / student (20.2%), farm labourer (3.3%), domestic servant (2.9%) and general labourer (2.8%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 25% of all McManuses, followed by domestic service, textiles & clothing and general labourers.
What religion is McManus?
McManuses were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 93.4% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (3.9%), Presbyterian (1.5%), Protestant (0.2%) and Congregationalist (0.1%).
