Of the McMeekins whose literacy was recorded, 79.8% could both read and write, 4.3% could read but not write, and 15.9% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 82% reading and writing against 77.9% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were textile worker (12.1%), farmer (4.2%), shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (4.2%) and general labourer (3.7%). Grouped by sector, textiles & clothing accounted for 16% of all McMeekins, followed by agriculture, retail & commerce and general labourers.
What religion is McMeekin?
Most McMeekins, 60.5%, were Presbyterian. The remainder were mostly Anglican (24.7%), Congregationalist (4.9%), Roman Catholic (3%) and Methodist (2.5%).
