Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Grouped by sector, textiles & clothing accounted for 9.7% of all McMurtrys, followed by agriculture, retail & commerce and general labourers.

McMurtrys were predominantly Presbyterian (76.5%). The remainder were mostly Methodist (8.3%), Anglican (7.6%), Congregationalist (4.3%) and No Religion (1.1%).
