Of the McNamas whose literacy was recorded, 77.3% could both read and write, 4% could read but not write, and 18.7% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 84.4% reading and writing against 72.1% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common occupation among McNamas was farmer, 34.6% of them (27 people). Next came scholar / student (16.7%), farm labourer (2.6%), clerk / office worker (1.3%) and general labourer (1.3%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 38.5% of all McNamas, followed by clerical & administration, domestic service and general labourers.
