The 1911 Census recorded 1,559 people named McNamee in Ireland, about 0.036% of everyone living in the country at the time and the 558th most common surname overall. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 750 men and 807 women. (A small number, 2, had no sex recorded.)

Tyrone had the largest share of McNamees, 18.9% (294 people). Next came Donegal (256), Derry (170), Antrim (125) and Dublin (123).

The average McNamee in 1911 was 31.7 years old, 32.4 for men and 31.1 for women; slightly older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. The most common male names were John (128), Patrick, James, Michael and Thomas; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (101), followed by Bridget, Annie, Catherine and Margaret.

The most common occupation among McNamees was farmer, 18.7% of them (292 people). Next came scholar / student (18.3%), farm labourer (4.4%), general labourer (3.7%) and domestic servant (3%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 23.5% of all McNamees, followed by domestic service, textiles & clothing and general labourers.

McNamees were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 96.3% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (1.9%), Presbyterian (1.2%) and Methodist (0.1%).
