Men came out slightly ahead, 75% reading and writing against 73% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were general labourer (12.5%), farm labourer (4.5%), metal worker / engineer (4.5%) and farmer (3.4%). Grouped by sector, general labourers accounted for 12.5% of all McNaughts, followed by agriculture, textiles & clothing and transport.
What religion is McNaught?
Most McNaughts, 50%, were Presbyterian. The remainder were mostly Roman Catholic (36.4%) and Anglican (13.6%).
