The 1911 Census recorded 374 people named McNeice in Ireland; roughly one in every 12,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 190 men and 184 women.

The McNeices were heavily concentrated in Antrim, home to 58% of them (217 people). Next came Down (40), Armagh (32), Limerick (22) and Sligo (14).

The average McNeice in 1911 was 29.2 years old, 26.6 for men and 31.8 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.

Of the McNeices whose literacy was recorded, 77.1% could both read and write, 7.2% could read but not write, and 15.7% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 79% reading and writing against 75% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were James (26), John, Thomas, William and Daniel. For women it was Mary (21), followed by Elizabeth, Jane, Annie and Sarah.

The most common entry on a McNeice's census form was "Scholar"; 19.5% (73) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (7.2%), textile worker (6.7%), general labourer (5.3%) and farm labourer (2.7%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 10.4% of all McNeices, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and domestic service.
What religion is McNeice?
The largest religious group among McNeices was Presbyterian, at 39.3%. The remainder were mostly Anglican (32.4%), Roman Catholic (19.5%), Methodist (2.9%) and Congregationalist (1.9%).
