The 1911 Census recorded 219 people named McNiece in Ireland; roughly one in every 20,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 108 men and 111 women.

The McNieces were heavily concentrated in Antrim, home to 50.7% of them (111 people). Next came Armagh (50), Tyrone (28), Monaghan (15) and Down (8).

The average McNiece in 1911 was 33.2 years old, 34.6 for men and 31.8 for women; noticeably older than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
McNiece literacy in 1911
Of the McNieces whose literacy was recorded, 78.3% could both read and write, 7.4% could read but not write, and 14.3% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
McNiece common first names
The most common male names were John (17), Thomas, James, William and Francis. For women it was Mary (15), followed by Annie, Sarah, Elizabeth and Catherine.
McNiece occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a McNiece's census form was "Scholar"; 17.8% (39) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were textile worker (16%), farmer (15.1%), general labourer (4.1%) and farm labourer (3.7%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 18.7% of all McNieces, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and retired & pensioners.
What religion is McNiece?
The largest religious group among McNieces was Presbyterian, at 37.4%. The remainder were mostly Roman Catholic (37.4%), Anglican (21.9%), Methodist (1.4%) and Atheist (0.9%).
