The 1911 Census recorded 226 people named McStay in Ireland; roughly one in every 19,000 people carried the name. There were noticeably more men than women recorded: 129 men to 96 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)

Down was McStay country: 33.2% of them (75 people) lived there in 1911. Next came Armagh (50), Antrim (48), Longford (26) and Cavan (19).

The average McStay in 1911 was 30.7 years old, 30.2 for men and 31.3 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
McStay literacy in 1911
Of the McStays whose literacy was recorded, 70% could both read and write, 6.9% could read but not write, and 23% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 72% reading and writing against 67.4% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were Patrick (16), John, James, Peter and Joseph. For women it was Mary (16), followed by Catherine, Sarah, Annie and Bridget.
McStay occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a McStay's census form was "Scholar"; 24.3% (55) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (10.6%), textile worker (8%), farm labourer (7.5%) and general labourer (4.4%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 18.1% of all McStays, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and domestic service.
What religion is McStay?
McStays were predominantly Roman Catholic (84.1%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (11.9%) and Presbyterian (3.5%).
