The 1911 Census recorded 411 people named McTigue in Ireland; roughly one in every 11,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 202 men and 209 women.

The McTigues were heavily concentrated in Mayo, home to 61.1% of them (251 people). Next came Leitrim (59), Clare (57), Galway (37) and Cavan (4).

That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
McTigue literacy in 1911
Of the McTigues whose literacy was recorded, 66.2% could both read and write, 3.3% could read but not write, and 30.5% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (35), Patrick, Michael, Thomas and James; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (38), followed by Bridget, Catherine, Margaret and Ellen.

The most common occupation among McTigues was farmer, 25.8% of them (106 people). Next came scholar / student (17.3%), domestic servant (2.9%), general labourer (2.4%) and farm labourer (1.5%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 28% of all McTigues, followed by domestic service, general labourers and retail & commerce.
