That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Among the rest, the most common occupations were shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (8.6%), clerk / office worker (5.7%), sailor / dock worker (4.3%) and textile worker (4.3%). Grouped by sector, retail & commerce accounted for 8.6% of all McVeas, followed by clerical & administration, textiles & clothing and public service & defence.
What religion is McVea?
Most McVeas, 65.7%, were Presbyterian. The remainder were mostly Unitarian (10%), Methodist (7.1%), Plymouth Brethren (7.1%) and Anglican (4.3%).
