That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.

Of the McVicars whose literacy was recorded, 84.6% could both read and write, 3.8% could read but not write, and 11.5% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 92.9% reading and writing against 75% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were James (6), John, George, Thomas and Alexander. For women it was Sarah (3), followed by Bridget, Margaret, Minnie and Susan.

The most common entry on a McVicar's census form was "Scholar"; 32.7% (17) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (7.7%), domestic servant (3.8%), general labourer (3.8%) and metal worker / engineer (3.8%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 9.6% of all McVicars, followed by domestic service, general labourers and metal & engineering.
What religion is McVicar?
McVicars were predominantly Roman Catholic (73.1%). The remainder were mostly Anglican (13.5%) and Presbyterian (13.5%).
