Of the Mealys whose literacy was recorded, 73.6% could both read and write, 0% could read but not write, and 26.4% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 76.7% reading and writing against 69.6% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (6), Martin, George, Michael and Anthony. For women it was Bridget (3), followed by Julia, Mary, Ellen and Lizzie.

The most common entry on a Mealy's census form was "Scholar"; 12.7% (7) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (9.1%), miner / quarryman (9.1%), baker / confectioner (5.5%) and domestic servant (5.5%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 14.5% of all Mealys, followed by domestic service, mining & quarrying and food & drink.

Mealys were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 92.7% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (5.5%) and Presbyterian (1.8%).
