Mearns literacy in 1911
Of the Mearnses whose literacy was recorded, 89.2% could both read and write, 0.7% could read but not write, and 10.1% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 90.3% reading and writing against 88.3% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

Grouped by sector, textiles & clothing accounted for 8.4% of all Mearnses, followed by general labourers, agriculture and domestic service.

The largest religious group among Mearnses was Roman Catholic, at 42%. The remainder were mostly Anglican (28.7%), Presbyterian (24.5%), Congregationalist (4.2%) and Protestant (0.7%).
