The 1911 Census recorded 374 people named Meegan in Ireland; roughly one in every 12,000 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 198 men and 176 women.

The Meegans were heavily concentrated in Monaghan, home to 64.7% of them (242 people). Next came Louth (55), Dublin (19), Tyrone (19) and Mayo (9).

Of the Meegans whose literacy was recorded, 70.3% could both read and write, 2.7% could read but not write, and 26.9% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were Patrick (36), James, Michael, John and Thomas; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (41), followed by Bridget, Maggie, Alice and Kate.

The most common occupation among Meegans was farmer, 21.7% of them (81 people). Next came scholar / student (14.7%), farm labourer (5.9%), general labourer (3.5%) and domestic servant (2.1%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 28.1% of all Meegans, followed by domestic service, general labourers and retail & commerce.
What religion is Meegan?
Meegans were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 99.7% of them. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (0.3%).
