That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Mercer literacy in 1911
Of the Mercers whose literacy was recorded, 83.6% could both read and write, 3.4% could read but not write, and 12.9% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (24), James, Robert, William and Thomas. For women it was Mary (24), followed by Margaret, Annie, Jane and Sarah.

The most common entry on a Mercer's census form was "Scholar"; 14.3% (111) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (10.9%), textile worker (7.8%), shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (5%) and clerk / office worker (2.5%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 11.5% of all Mercers, followed by textiles & clothing, retail & commerce and manufacturing & trades.
What religion is Mercer?
Most Mercers, 52.5%, were Anglican. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (28.7%), Methodist (11.4%), Roman Catholic (3.4%) and Congregationalist (2.1%).
