That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Milligan literacy in 1911
Of the Milligans whose literacy was recorded, 77.7% could both read and write, 5.3% could read but not write, and 17% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 79.3% reading and writing against 75.9% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (60), William, James, Thomas and Samuel. For women it was Margaret (35), followed by Mary, Elizabeth, Annie and Jane.

The most common entry on a Milligan's census form was "Scholar"; 18.9% (188) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (7.7%), textile worker (6.7%), general labourer (4.3%) and seamstress (3.2%). Grouped by sector, textiles & clothing accounted for 12% of all Milligans, followed by agriculture, general labourers and retail & commerce.

The largest religious group among Milligans was Anglican, at 41.9%. The remainder were mostly Presbyterian (24.1%), Roman Catholic (17.9%), Baptist (5%) and Methodist (4.9%).
