That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Minehane literacy in 1911
Of the Minehanes whose literacy was recorded, 73.5% could both read and write, 0% could read but not write, and 26.5% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 80% reading and writing against 69% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common entry on a Minehane's census form was "Scholar"; 13.2% (7) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (11.3%), general labourer (9.4%), farm labourer (7.5%) and shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (3.8%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 18.9% of all Minehanes, followed by general labourers, retail & commerce and building & construction.
What religion is Minehane?
Minehanes were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 96.2% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (3.8%).
