Women came out slightly ahead, 85.7% reading and writing against 75.9% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were William (4), Alexander, Edward, Richard P and Samuel. For women it was Catherine (3), followed by Agnes, Elizabeth, Jane and Maggie.

Next came scholar / student (14.3%), general labourer (5.7%), shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (5.7%) and carpenter / joiner (4.3%). Mogeys were predominantly Presbyterian (71.4%). The remainder were mostly Methodist (20%) and Non-Conformist (7.1%).
