That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. Mongan literacy in 1911
Of the Mongans whose literacy was recorded, 61.9% could both read and write, 8.3% could read but not write, and 29.8% could do neither. Women came out slightly ahead, 63.2% reading and writing against 60.6% of men. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were James (22), Michael, John, Patrick and Thomas; the same five names that topped the list nationally. For women it was Mary (24), followed by Bridget, Ellen, Annie and Honor.

The most common occupation among Mongans was farmer, 28% of them (82 people). Next came scholar / student (15.4%), farm labourer (4.1%), blacksmith / smith (2.7%) and domestic servant (2%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 32.4% of all Mongans, followed by metal & engineering, domestic service and professional.
What religion is Mongan?
Mongans were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 99.3% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (0.7%).
