The 1911 Census recorded 512 people named Monks in Ireland; roughly one in every 8,600 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 239 men and 271 women. (A small number, 2, had no sex recorded.)
Counties with Monks in Ireland
The Monkses were heavily concentrated in Dublin, home to 84.6% of them (433 people). Next came Wicklow (19), Carlow (11), Galway (7) and Meath (7).

The average Monks in 1911 was 28.4 years old, 28.0 for men and 28.6 for women; a touch younger than the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Monks literacy in 1911
Of the Monkses whose literacy was recorded, 87.7% could both read and write, 2.2% could read but not write, and 9.8% could do neither. The figures were much the same for men and women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.

The most common male names were John (26), Patrick, Michael, James and William. For women it was Mary (37), followed by Bridget, Margaret, Catherine and Elizabeth.
Monks occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Monks's census form was "Scholar"; 22.1% (113) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (7.2%), general labourer (5.7%), domestic servant (3.7%) and shopkeeper / shop assistant / dealer (3.3%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 9% of all Monkses, followed by general labourers, domestic service and retail & commerce.
What religion is Monks?
Monkses were overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, 96.3% of them. The remainder were mostly Anglican (2.5%), Unitarian (0.4%) and Presbyterian (0.2%).
