That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Monroe literacy in 1911
Of the Monroes whose literacy was recorded, 82.4% could both read and write, 5.9% could read but not write, and 11.8% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 87.1% reading and writing against 78.4% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Monroe common first names
The most common male names were John (3), William, Charles, Robert and Samuel. For women it was Elizabeth (3), followed by Anne, Annie, Bridget and Martha.
Monroe occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Monroe's census form was "Scholar"; 17.6% (12) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were textile worker (10.3%), farmer (8.8%), carpenter / joiner (4.4%) and clerk / office worker (2.9%). Grouped by sector, textiles & clothing accounted for 10.3% of all Monroes, followed by agriculture, domestic service and building & construction.
What religion is Monroe?
Most Monroes, 64.7%, were Anglican. The remainder were mostly Roman Catholic (14.7%), Presbyterian (8.8%), Methodist (5.9%) and Baptist (4.4%).
