The 1911 Census recorded 669 people named Moody in Ireland; roughly one in every 6,600 people carried the name. The name was split fairly evenly between men and women: 336 men and 332 women. (A small number, 1, had no sex recorded.)

Antrim had the largest share of Moodys, 21.8% (146 people). Next came Derry (94), Dublin (86), Wicklow (70) and Offaly (61).

The average Moody in 1911 was 29.5 years old, 29.6 for men and 29.3 for women; almost exactly in line with the national averages of 29.6 for men and 30.5 for women. That low figure reflects just how many children there were in Edwardian Ireland, along with high infant mortality and the limits of public health at the time. For comparison, average life expectancy in Ireland today is around 83.
Moody literacy in 1911
Of the Moodys whose literacy was recorded, 83% could both read and write, 2.9% could read but not write, and 14.1% could do neither. Men came out slightly ahead, 84.4% reading and writing against 81.7% of women. Bear in mind these figures include young children; the census itself only counted people aged nine and over when calculating illiteracy, on the grounds that it was unfair to label a child illiterate before they'd had a chance to learn.
Moody common first names
The most common male names were William (52), John, Thomas, James and Robert. For women it was Elizabeth (23), followed by Mary, Annie, Lizzie and Martha.
Moody occupations in 1911
The most common entry on a Moody's census form was "Scholar"; 19.3% (129) were children at school. Among the rest, the most common occupations were farmer (12.6%), textile worker (4.5%), general labourer (3.9%) and farm labourer (3.6%). Grouped by sector, agriculture accounted for 16.6% of all Moodys, followed by textiles & clothing, general labourers and retail & commerce.
What religion is Moody?
The largest religious group among Moodys was Presbyterian, at 44.2%. The remainder were mostly Anglican (35.7%), Roman Catholic (18.4%), Non-Conformist (0.6%) and Plymouth Brethren (0.4%).
